Sony State of Play: when is the next 2024 PlayStation event?

We’ve already had a few State of Play events to enjoy so far in 2024, but there’s likely even more on the way. Sony has yet to reveal the next event, but given we’ve now had a hardware reveal come and go, and the reveal of some limited edition 30th anniversary gear, we’re once again hopeful for something that’s focused on games.

The aforementioned hardware reveal was the PS5 Pro’s announcement in a PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation on September 10. Now, all eyes have turned back to the next State of Play – a new console will need new games to play on it, after all, even if it is a mid-gen refresh machine.

Since the series of shows began in 2019, Sony has used the State of Play presentations to reveal big-hitting games and details such as The Last of Us 2 release date, debut gameplay footage for Ghost of Tsushima, and more. So, it’s always worth tuning in to the State of Play live streams if you want to be alerted to any big announcements for new PS5 games.

The last State of Play aired on May 30, 2024, and was dedicated to showing off a bunch of new announcements. One of these was Astro Bot, revealing that the PS5 mascot is finally getting its own mainline game. Here’s what we know about the next State of Play event, and what to expect.

The next State of Play event has yet to be confirmed by Sony. That’s the bad news.

The good news, though unconfirmed still, is that a September State of Play – or Showcase – is highly likely given the regularity of them in previous years. Our guess is that we’ll hear about or see a State of Play or Showcase in the first half of September 2024.

Sony State of Play events have become quite hard to predict over the years. Generally, they focus on PS5 and VR, with third-party announcements making up the bulk of the show. At times, larger games have been announced via these events, but mostly, these are reserved for PlayStation Showcase events. Similarly, major hardware announcements are unlikely to appear at a State of Play, but you might see smaller accessories like new headsets and devices like PlayStation Portal.

We’re quietly hopeful for some chunky updates on DLC for Marvel‘s Spider-Man 2, perhaps another look at Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, or maybe even a look at Marvel‘s Wolverine or the next game from Naughty Dog.
