PlayStation State of Play August 2020 live blog: we’re covering PS4 and PS5 game updates now null

Today’s PlayStation State of Play event isn’t the big one – Sony has confirmed it won’t focus on PS5, but instead on third-party games coming to PS4 and PS VR. It won’t be entirely devoid of PS5-related information, though: Sony has said there will be a few PS5 game updates, but only for third-party and indie titles first seen in the PS5 games showcase back in June. Don’t expect anything from the PlayStation Studios stable of exclusive games.
Here’s how to watch the Sony State of Play August 2020 livestream, if you want to tune in now and watch it. Below, we’re live-blogging the event, so you can enjoy analysis of all the announcements – even if we’ve been assured that nothing nearly as juicy as the PS5 price is going to be revealed at this event.
Read along below right now, and enjoy 40-something minutes of new PlayStation gameplay and assorted updates with us. The event has already begun!
All times in Pacific Daylight time (PDT).
13.33 – Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a third-person action game coming in 2021. This medieval-looking game could be a co-op title, if we had to guess. It looks a little Vermintide-y. Some gameplay was shown off at the end, there.
13.32 – Here we go, more PS5 games!
13.31 – The Pedestrian is a 2D platformer that has you build levels together on the fly, before seemingly controlling your character, with lots of effort put into 3D background envrionments. It’s out in January 2021.
13.30 – Auto Chess comes to PS4 this October.
13.29 – Time for more Control DLC from Remedy – this time the third-person action game will feature Alan Wake from the popular Stephen King-esque Xbox horror game. It’s out on August 27, and it’s called AWE.
13.28 – Time for more PS VR, with the next Star Wars game, Vader Immortal, being shown off. It’s out on August 25.
13.27 – We see more Bugsnax in action, with first-person bug-nabbing action, and hear lots of extremely exaggerated accents. Bugsnax is coming to PS5 this December, and it’s previously been announced for PS4.
13.26 – BUGSNAX IS HERE!
13.25 – Another 2D game, this time set in dreamy sci-fi landscapes. It’s called Anno Mutationem, and is out in December 2020.
13.23 – Next up is Aon Must Die, a 2D fighting game from Focus Home Interactive, which for about 20 seconds I thought was going to be a Warhammer 40,000-themed game (they said ‘Emperor’ a lot). It looks…fine. The art style looks nice, and the music choice reminds me of Furi on PS4.
13.21 – Next up is a new trailer for Genshin Impact on PS4, an open-world RPG that looks kind of pretty.
Yes, what the world needs now is more games that threaten to eat up tens of hours of our short lives…
13.21 – Next up is Spelunky 2, on PS4, a follow-up to the platforming roguelike that’s beloved by its hardcore audience. This entry will feature online multiplayer. Spelunky 2 releases on September 15, 2020.
13.13 – Developer Giant Squid is now showing off Pathless, first shown in the PS5 showcase in June. You play as a hunter in an open world, with detailed archery gameplay that lets you pull off accurate shots at speed. You can also fly over the environments. This footage, captured on PS5, looks gorgeous.
It features stealth gameplay, with the color palette flipping to show you ‘cursed spirits’ enemies in the world. It’s got a little whiff of Breath of the Wild about it, which is no bad thing. You have to reach towers before you’re allowed to clear out groups of enemies. The game is out later this year.
Giant Squid is the developer behind Abzu, the memorable underwater adventure on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
13.10 – Braid: Anniversary Edition is next, a new version of the classic time-reversing indie platformer, with brand new graphics to underline the painterly style of the game. It’s out early next year, and will feature new behind-the-scenes material.
13.08 – Next up, Hitman 3, which is coming to PS4 and PS5. We see a level in action. Here we’re seeing a first-person PS VR mode in action. The trailer reveals that players can enjoy the whole trilogy in VR when it releases early next year.
13.03 – First up, a new gameplay video for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. It’s a sequel to the PlayStation series, and is the first new entry in over a decade. It looks extremely nice, in the style of the very successful N-Sane trilogy on PS4.
Players can wallrun and zip climb in this entry, and he has a suite of nice new outfits for players to unlock. No microtransactions to unlock them, thankfully. Four new masks give you the ability to control different elements of the game.
Coco, too, will be a playable character in this new title. Also revealed is a new mode for the game, called Inverted Mode. It’s this game’s version of a mirror mode, changing elements of the game to encourage you to replay each level.
The game is coming out on PS4 on October 2.
13.00 – Here we go! PS4, PSVR and some PS5 game updates (but nothing juicy on the hardware at all).
12.45 – If you want more information on how the next-gen war is panning out so far in this pre-release phase, it’s worth checking out our comparison of the PS5 vs the Xbox Series X, where we discuss specs, software, the controllers and more.
12.30 – Just 30 minutes until the PlayStation State of Play event begins. With a focus on PS4 and PS VR games, and Sony ruling out PlayStation Studios titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West, what’s going to be here is actually a little bit of a mystery. We’d expect indie games to get a healthy showcase here – and we’ll see some of the non-Sony games from the PS5 showcase get updates, too.
12.21 – To give you an idea of games that are confirmed for PS4 this year, there’s Mafia: Definitive Edition, Marvel’s Avengers (which has featured in the news a lot this week for its PlayStation-exclusive content), Dirt 5, Star Wars: Squadrons (which will feature PS VR), FIFA 21, and The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope. Of those, we think Squadrons and Avengers are the most likely to pop up today.
12.05 – Less than an hour to go! Remember you can tune into the State of Play livestream here.
11.45 – Just over an hour until the State of Play livestream starts. Sony’s latest tweet on this event underlines what we already knew – no major PS5 stuff. “Tune in for news on upcoming PS4 & PS VR games, and some updates on third-party and indie games from June’s PS5 showcase. (P.S. No PS5 hardware/business announcements!)”
11.15 – If you’re curious about which games are definitely coming to PS5, including cross-gen titles, I recommend reading our PS5 games list. Today, Bethesda confirmed that Doom Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online will be coming to PS5, with free upgrades for existing owners on PS4.
11.00 – It’s hard to tell which games might get the spotlight during this event. It’s possible you might see multiplatform games like Bugsnax and Jett: The Far Shore getting attention during this livestream – those are indie titles that are set to debut on both PS4 and PS5.
10.40 – Well hello there! If you’re looking to follow along with whatever Sony shows tonight: welcome. Sony did the right thing by briefing fans not to expect updates to do with PS5 hardware, pre-orders or release dates from this State of Play, instead stating that this livestream will highlight some games coming to PlayStation in future.
While we can expect a minor presence from third-party and indie PS5 titles, Sony has plainly said the focus is on what’s coming to PS4 and PSVR. So, it probably won’t be a mind-blowing livestream for new stuff, but it’s worth watching if you want to know what else you’ll be able to play in the near future.
